VLC - Video Player

Download VLC here. This is a rather unatractive media player with an ugly traffic cone logo! However when my Real Player plus (wish I had saved the money!!) , roxio player and windows media player let me down, VLC came to the rescue. It seems to play anything, fix errors and now I use it all the time. I can't save money on this one but you can. Real Player plus costs about 30 pounds but will not play many AVI files and has a very limited range of DVD type files it will record. File Size 15.9 MB.

WinAmp - Music Player

Winamp Download Winamp here. Does this need any introduction? Maybe for some. It is a free media player and will handle almost any type of music. You can download lots of designs to change the look of the player and some are works of art!. Best of all it is free. File Size 9.45 MB

BurnAware Free - CD and DVD Recorder

Download BurnAware Free here. This is my next experiment. It will record most sorts of CD and DVD from a large range of file formats. Came across it while trying out Ashampoo Burner to record on DVD, which by the way is soooo good, too bad you have to pay for it. Anyhow it's got good reviews on CNET and seems worth a try. Audacity - Recording Studio

Download Audacity here. Another of my great favourites. Record sounds, mix them, lay down tracks or simply edit talks or use as a pronunication practice tool. It works really well and causes no problems. Infact it is easier to use and has more tools than commercial programs that cost a lot. You might have save around 100 pounds here! File Size 2.13 MB.

Core FTP - File Transfer

Free FTP . A nicely written and designed FTP utility. With this you can do all you need to upload websites, create directories, change file names, or download files from FTP servers. Again free for life. If you buy a commercial FTP program you will pay 30 pounds, however by coming here and downloading you just saved that. Congratulations! File Size 3.33 MB.

Net2ftp - FTP in your browser

With this website you can access your FTP site on your web hosting provider or any other for that matter. Simply type in hte ftp server address and the password. It is actually much quick than any ftp program and requires no download. The only restrictions and 5M uploads. When we had repeated local issues with wise-ftp, the free ftp utility our hosting gave us for free, this web service got us out of real problems. Here's the URL.

7Zip - File Compression Utility

Download 7Zip here. At last a Zip program that decompresses just about all the popular compressed file formats. This little gem is totally free without any nags or toolbars. It works like a dream and is very usefull. Great! I will never have to use WinZip ever again which is pretty useless and has to be de-installed if you don't buy it. File Size 987.8 KB

The GIMP - Image Editing

Download the GIMP here. This one is a little bit complicated but if you are used to 100s of menus and enough options to make you sea sick, this is for you. It lacks nothing for photo editing and graphics creation. It is totally free and has a great community supporting it. Sit back and polish up your latest digital snaps as you remind yourself you have saved almost 900 pounds on photoshop ! File size 15.33 MB.
